System Management & Cloud Computing

Research Computing Services can provide consultations to outline how research goals can be met through an offering of options such as hosting, virtual systems and servers, cloud resourcing and more.

  • Host physical/virtual systems both on/off premise and in the cloud
  • Assist with the setup and administration of system software and applications:
    • Virtual systems
    • Physical & virtual servers
    • Cloud computing resources
    • High performance computing
    • High throughput computing
    • High performance and  throughput computing configuration and operation

Cloud Computing

Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are cloud services platforms which LMU has accounts for and are usable for research and teaching. These platforms can be used for virtual computing power, storage, servers, databases, analytics, and more.

Researchers often use Google Cloud and AWS for secure, flexible, and on-demand computing processes, data storage, cluster computing, machine learning, and data archives. It can also be used for more public-facing database interfaces, web services, analytical reports, and collaborations with other institutions.

Research, Teaching and Learning in Google Cloud

With so many potential use cases for cloud technologies in research, teaching and learning, sometimes it can feel overwhelming on where to begin. Review the following resources as a starting point and email us, as ITS has expertise in cloud computing and we are happy to help faculty figure out how to unlock the powerful resources available in AWS.

    Costing and Funding in AWS

Cloud resources charge on a per use basis. As such, LMU cannot purchase a site license for AWS with unlimited use like we do other systems.

ITS is committed to doing everything we can to make cloud resources accessible and affordable for research and teaching. As such, we highly encourage faculty to apply to the following credit programs:

    Additionally, other resources are available:

    • Faculty Software Purchasing Allowance
    • Grants

We know funding can look like a barrier to using resources that are key to research and teaching in the modern world. Please email us if you have a great idea but do not know where to go for funding. Whatever you do, please do not halt a great idea due to lack of funds!

To find out more information about how much your cloud computing project would cost in AWS, use the AWS Pricing Calculator.

    Pilot Program

LMU ITS is currently seeking faculty to join the Google Cloud Pilot Program to test various research and teaching use cases for cloud computing. If you have a use case for cloud computing for either research or teaching, ITS is looking for pioneering faculty to join this endeavor.

    Program Requirements

    • Full or Part-time Faculty that has a project which can be implemented in the 2022-2023 academic year
    • Work with ITS in the design, build & implementation phases of your project
    • Provide honest feedback along the way
    • Join User Group meetings once every two months starting in the Fall semester (dates to be coordinated with the group)

    Benefits

    • Receive technical support by ITS and our partner Burwood Group
    • Influence how cloud products are used at LMU for research and teaching
    • Receive some financial support from ITS

If you are interested in joining this pilot, please email david.scozzaro@lmu.edu.
