AWS Research
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a cloud services platform. This platform can be used for virtual computing power, storage, servers, databases, analytics, and more.
Researchers often use AWS for secure, flexible, and on-demand computing processing, data storage, cluster computing, machine learning, and data archives. It can also be used for more public-facing database interfaces, web services, analytical reports, and collaborations with other institutions.
LMU researchers have the following two AWS options:
LMU-Hosted AWS
LMU has a hosted AWS account that provides discounted services for large or ongoing research projects. AWS Enterprise accounts are a contracted service individual groups or units at LMU can purchase and use. Associated fees are the responsibility of the department purchasing AWS. LMU ITS is responsible for the maintenance and oversight of the Enterprise Agreement, which includes the monthly reclassification of AWS Institution Enterprise charges back to account holders whose service consumption generates those charges.
If you are a faculty member at LMU and need services beyond what AWS Educate provides, please take a look at the steps below to begin the process of establishing an AWS Institutional account through LMU.
AWS Educate
LMU is an Amazon Web Service Educate Institution. All faculty, staff and, students are eligible for AWS Educate accounts through this program, which provide free credit. Educate provides public cloud products and services for faculty and academic researchers to utilize for teaching and learning and includes open source curated content, training resources, collaboration tools and a community of cloud users to engage with.
AWS Educate accounts are an agreement between the end user and AWS. LMU ITS does not have access to these accounts. Support can be obtained through forums and email to AWS, or purchased from AWS.

Option 1: LMU-Hosted AWS - You must provide a department budget number to establish an account. Establishing an account includes your authorization for ITS to charge back the stated departmental budget for any account-related use charges.
- Step 1: After consultation with Research Services, contact
- Step 2: Acknowledgement and commitment to the appropriate use and payment terms of AWS services by reviewing and signing security and policy agreements.
- Step 3: ITS Creates your AWS Account
- Step 4: ITS notifies you of AWS Account Activation and any onboarding processes
