Microphones for the Classrooms
-
All general-purpose classrooms have microphones installed, as well as a movable HD webcam with a stereo mic, to enable Zoom or Classroom Capture (Echo360) recording. If a microphone is needed in labs or studios that do not have voice amplification systems, please reach out to your Instructional Technologist to set up a consultation, so ITS can find a solution that will work for your space.

In almost all cases, ITS recommends using the microphone system already in the room. Because classrooms use different types of AV systems, there is not a “one size fits all” microphone that will work in every space. ITS has placed the appropriate microphone type into each general purpose classroom. Each microphone is compatible with the AV system in the room and easy to use. Your personal microphone may not be compatible with the in-room sound system.
In addition, great care must be taken with wireless mics to ensure that nearby microphones are not using the same channels or frequencies. This would lead to interference between classrooms.
Wireless microphones present additional difficulties with batteries, the pairing of transmitters and receivers, and the risk of one of the components being left behind in a classroom, which would make the microphone non-functional in other spaces.

If a microphone is needed in a seminar room, lab, or studio that does not have a voice amplification system, please reach out to your Instructional Technologist to set up a consultation, so ITS can find a solution that will work for your space. We have purchased portable equipment that can be placed in these learning spaces for the duration of the semester on an as-needed basis.
